Inc. president Lee Gentine. “There are not a lot of large, private companies and that gives us the luxury of a long-term perspective.”
Sargento Cheese Co., marketer of convenient natural and imitation cheese products, knows what it takes to be successful. It currently produces the second largest-selling brand of natural cheeses in the United States, surpassed only by Kraft General Foods.
Parent company, Sargento Inc., which is owned by Gentine and five other family members, has definite goals for the future. The company has a strong growth strategy that includes acquisition. “When the right opportunity comes along, we move,” says Gentine.
Right now, the company has room to grow into a new packaging facility in Fond Du Lac, Wis. The 60,000-square-foot structure went on-line in January. Besides the new facility, Sargento Inc. has a packaging and distribution plant in Plymouth, Wis.; a manufacturing plant in Elkhart Lake, Wis., which focuses on products for the industrial market; and a flexible packaging materials manufacturing plant, Duralam Inc., in Appleton, Wis.
New products to come out of Sargento in the last 18 months include Fancy Shredded Pizza Double Cheese, which combines mozzarella and mild cheddar; Fancy Shredded Cheese for Tacos and Nachos, which combines Colby-jack with south-of-the-border seasoning; and Mootown Snackers, a line of 100 percent natural cheese snacks. “The Mootown Snackers have been our most significant project,” Gentine says. “With this product, I think Sargento is taking the most aggressive role in the industry.” The product is being marketed not only as a cheese product, but as a healthy snack alternative.
Mootown Snackers have gotten plenty of ad exposure, but nowhere more positively than in a McDonald’s coupon book this past January. The Bonus Books appeared for a limited time in McDonald’s Happy Meals, a special food package for children.
Another first for Sargento is its use of a special tear strip opening on packages of shredded cheese. Now consumers can easily rip open a package and quickly zipper it back up with the Zip-Pak closure. Gentine says, “We look at the fact that good, loyal users of Sargento cheese will appreciate the convenience of our products.” As a result of that loyalty, Sargento Cheese Co. expects to have sales of $160 million in 1990.
